Bridal Hair and Makeup in Iowa City
Your wedding morning should feel calm, and that starts with preparation. We have been doing Iowa City weddings since 1999, in the salon and on location, for parties of two and parties of twelve. Every bride we work with does a practice style first, so the look is settled long before the day, and nobody is improvising while a photographer waits. We handle hair, makeup, or both, and build the morning schedule backward from the time you need to be in the car.
- A practice bridal style so nothing is decided on the wedding morning
- In-salon or on-location service for the bride and the full party
- Hair, makeup, or both, with a built timeline for the whole group
We understand the importance of every detail when it comes to your special day, and our team of skilled professionals is committed to ensuring you radiate with beauty and confidence as you walk down the aisle. From intricately styled hair that compliments your bridal vision to makeup that enhances your natural glow, we work closely with you to bring your dream bridal look to life. From Inquiry to the Practice Style to the Wedding Morning
It starts with the inquiry form on this page or an email to amy@groovykatz.com with your date, your venue, and roughly how many people need services. From there, we confirm availability and build a quote. Popular Saturdays in May, June, September, and October book up a year out, so reach out early even if your details are not settled. Once you are on the calendar, we schedule your practice bridal style for somewhere between four and eight weeks before the wedding. Bring photos, bring your veil or hairpiece, and come with your hair washed the day before rather than the morning of, since day-old hair holds a style far better.
The practice run is where we solve problems while there is still time. We test how your hair holds, adjust the shape for your dress neckline, check the makeup in daylight and in flash, and settle the pieces that always cause morning-of stress, like where the veil sits and whether it comes out for the reception. We write the final look down so the person doing your hair on the day is following a plan, not a memory. Many brides also schedule a refreshing facial and an eyelash lift or extensions in the weeks leading up, and our team will help you sequence all three so nothing overlaps too closely to the wedding date. On-location service brings the team to your venue or hotel, and we will tell you what we need from the space, mostly good natural light, outlets, and a chair at counter height.
Planning Around an Eastern Iowa Wedding Season
Iowa weather shapes the plan more than most brides expect. August and September weddings mean humidity that will pull a smooth style out by the reception, so we build in more structure and set more heavily for summer dates. Outdoor ceremonies in an Iowa wind need pins and product chosen for holding, not softness. Winter weddings bring the opposite challenge, with dry indoor heat and static, plus the very real possibility that a January snow changes your travel timing.
Build the rest of your timeline backward too. Schedule your final color four to six weeks out, any facial at least two weeks, and any body or facial waxing three to five days before. See our bridal beauty team or read what other couples have said on our site.
Frequently Asked Questions
As early as you can, and ideally nine to twelve months out for a Saturday in May, June, September, or October. Those dates fill fast in Iowa City, particularly when a wedding party needs several artists at once. Email amy@groovykatz.com or use the inquiry form above with your date, venue, and headcount, and consider scheduling your bridal skincare treatments at the same time so those dates are held too.
Yes, and it is the single best thing you can do for a calm wedding morning. The practice run is where we find out your hair drops a curl after three hours, the shape fights your neckline, or the veil sits wrong. Fixing that six weeks out is easy. Fixing it at 8 a.m. on the day is not. Book your practice style four to eight weeks before the wedding, bring your veil and reference photos, and consider timing a bridal facial around the same visit.
Yes, we offer on-location service for the bride and the wedding party, and the inquiry form above has a field for your service location. We will need good natural light, access to outlets, and a chair at counter height, and we factor travel into the quote based on distance. Many couples in North Liberty, West Branch, and the surrounding towns choose on-location so nobody has to drive in wedding clothes, and we can bring lash and brow services along for touch-ups for the full party.
It depends on the date and how many artists we can staff, which is exactly why the headcount question is on the inquiry form. Larger parties need more lead time and a staggered start schedule, which we build for you. Include everyone who needs hair, makeup, or eyelash extensions and brow shaping, including mothers and grandmothers, since those are the bookings that get forgotten and then need squeezing in.
Final color four to six weeks out, so there is time for a correction if you want one and the tone has settled. Facials at least two weeks out, and wax three to five days before rather than the day prior. Book your hair care and color appointments at the same time you lock your bridal date so the slots exist.
